For 44 years, Sofia has lent her name to the Sofia Feldman Hospital, a major maternity hospital in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The project, created by Seu Sofia, aims to illustrate the nine women who give their names to the delivery rooms of this maternity hospital, which welcomes an average of 900 women every month. The idea behind the project is to expand the hospital's brand through the sale of physical and digital products, an initiative that would create a way to raise funds for the hospital. The creation of the Sofia Feldman illustration was the first step in initiating this idea.
Sofia was a Palestinian woman who arrived in Brazil at the age of 13 to be married in an arranged marriage. Who was this woman who was taken from her country, so young and with so few photographs? What colors did she have, what did she like? From the contrast between the tones, it is possible to infer that the dress Sofia is wearing in the photo is light-colored. We have a stronger, shimmering, and sparkling point of color on the trim of the collar, which is made of lace. Could this lace be white? We have a medal on her chest that appears to be a heart. Probably silver or gold, but adding a color to this pendant would help us tell a story.
In family accounts, Sofia was portrayed as an angel. Sofia owned a guesthouse and sewed for others to support her children alone. The pink pendant, the lace, and her rosy lips seemed to balance the strong features and sad gaze of this woman, with all the love she represents.
